Leather and rain: be careful not to overdo it

Leather and water don’t go well together? Although it is not recommended to expose your jacket to the rain, it is a naturally resistant product that can withstand occasional downpours, provided you take care of it. A little maintenance guide to avoid damaging a brand new coat!

Leather and rain: be careful not to overdo it

Let’s not forget: leather remains basically skin, skin naturally protected by a hydrolipidic layer to resist water. It’s that famous little layer of withered skin that we get when we stay in the bath too long, for example.

On the other hand, transformed leather is treated and therefore no longer has this famous layer. However, it is possible to waterproof your clothing to provide this protection.

And as with skin, your leather jacket will need hydration and care in order to maintain its shine or aged appearance.

Leather care and waterproofing

When you buy a leather jacket, you waterproof it even before its first use , that’s the basis. A simple downpour can stain it indelibly.

We choose a product adapted to the type of leather, but also to the frequency of use or the frequency of exposure to rain. The product is then applied to clean, nourished clothing to prevent greasy stains from becoming lodged there.

Choose your product carefully, because everything matters. For example, oily leathers such as cowhide or buffalo will bleed more easily in the rain on white clothes, so you will need to use a resistant product:

  • maintenance cream,
  • waterproofing spray,
  • hydrating soap,
  • degreasing lotion, etc.
